Drug sentencing is often particularly stark because of “statutory minimum sentences”, which take away the freedom of the judge to assign lenient sentences when appropriate — statutory minimums try to turn jurisprudence into mathematics (bad move!)
Also, there’s absolutely no leeway in drug charges. The hearings are essentially “Did you use?” “Yes.” And, boom, jail as opposed to doing something good like sending them to rehab.
