My shit is crooked look at how far I done got without it
I keep my twisted grill, just to show the kids it's real
We ain't picture perfect but we worth the picture still
Here, Cole gets to the core of the song. Though he could presumably afford to fix his teeth, he keeps them as they are to remind kids coming up that you can have physical imperfections and still be a star
Sadly, this is far easier for men than women, especially those in public view. Female athletes are expected to be sexy in a way not applied to their male counterparts. And female musicians are subject to far harsher physical and social standards. Nicki Minaj put it well:
When you’re a girl, you have to be like…everything. You have to be dope at what you do, but you have to be super sweet and you have to be sexy and you have to be this and you have to be that and you have to be nice and you have to… It’s like, I can’t be all those things at once. I’m a human being.
This line is also a play on the phrase “picture perfect”. They may not be perfect but that doesn’t take away from their value, they’re worth the picture still.
