You ain't really eatin' boy, you gotta get your food up
We so steady eatin' baby, you already know that
“Eating” is an expression often used by rappers to gauge their level of financial success in their career. If a rapper is making money from their music, they are able to afford to put food on the table for them and their family, thereby allowing them to eat.
Gambino here admits to experiencing some level of ongoing success so far in his career by telling us that he is “steady eating” and therefore making money. We should know this by now though as Gambino has been involved in many projects including his role on the show Community, previously released album Camp, and mixtapes such as Culdesac and Royalty.
This could also be a reference to Gambino’s song “Sweatpants” from Because the Internet. The hook being, “Yeah you got some silverware, but really, are you eating though”?
