Meaning

TLC starts this thing off by making an analogy between herself and the sun—which, as everyone knows, rises and sets with daily regularity. (Later in the opening verse she attributes an epistemological intention to this rhythm: “like the sun know”.)

So right away the song claims to be about the convergence of metaphysical truths (articulated in this case as a kind of astrological project—the sun in astrology represents “who you are” and in this opening hook TLC claims to be “on her way down,” i.e. on the wan of the sun’s arc) and physical truths (physics, the planets, etc.).

“On my way down” also has a semi-religious connotation that is echoed later in the song when Cole raps “we in hell already.” One cannot help but think of Dante’s trek into the layered Inferno of the underworld, questing deeper and deeper——and this pseudo-religious interpretation is supported by the chant-like repetition of the main line …
