Meaning

The idea of “freedom or death” dates back at least to the late 18th century. The original slogan of Revolution-era France was “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, or Death”. They soon dropped the “or death” part, as it reminded people too much of the Revolution’s notorious Reign of Terror. See the slogan in its original form (and in French, obvs.) below:
