He references the late Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and the Nirvana song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

By calling himself Cobain’s back, he refers to the fact that Kurt Cobain represented “Generation X”, a generation of disaffected and a youth that who did not felt they belonged anywhere. MGK is in some sense also the represent for the young people who have it hard, someting he talks about on the songs Anybody’s Anthem and See My Tears.
Besides that Cobain and Kells share other similarities, both has a history with heroin and both are popular among the girls.

Also Nirvana is a play on words — between the band and the Buddhist afterlife. His weed is so awesome, that he calls it Nirvana, and by extension, his weed smells very potent.
