Me and hip-hop, that black Sid and Nancy
This is a reference to “Sid and Nancy” a bio pic about Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungeon. Sid is a talented musician who is introduced to heroin by Nancy. The result of their destructive relationship is both of their deaths. Nancy is killed by Sid, and Sid dies of a heroin overdose.
Now, go back through that explanation and replace “Sid” with “Childish Gambino”, and “Nancy” with “Hip-Hop”. Now you can see that CG plans on destroying “Hip-Hop” (In its largely intellectually void and static form it is today), but this crusade is also going to result in his death. This is consistent with a lot of CG’s earlier lyrics about dying early and/or suicide.
