I was born to be reckless
Was forced to make records
Before being known as The Weeknd, Abel was in a group called the Noise. Abel and fellow producer made reference tracks for R&B stars in an attempt to get noticed by the industry. So he was figuratively forced to make records he didn’t identify with just to get noticed.
One example:Birthday Suit which is a reference track for Drake.
After House of Balloons and Thursday came out, everyone was curious if there was more in store. Fans demanded new music, thus Echoes of Silence was released.
Similarly, the Weeknd’s music is very introspective, and offers an unprecedented commentary on a reckless lifestyle that is apparently typical of young Toronto natives. Due to his habits, Abel felt obliged to write music and talk about his life.
