With my peeps that's into drug money, market into rap
Back in the day, rappers used to get their start from drug dealers.
As explained in the documentary Planet Rock, rappers figured the dealers had money since they were the ones with nice cars and clothes, so they’d play a demo tape for them and the dealers might buy it for a few dollars. Then because dealers were playing it in their cars, everyone else wanted to get a hold of their tape so they could be like the dealers, too.
Even still, rappers who were former drug dealers turned the money they got from dealing to fund their own record labels.
Alternately, the rampant drug dealing ‘markets’ into rap through Nas, who sees it everywhere around him and incorporates it into his lyrics.
