ART OF LIVING
I was sitting peacefully in my backyard here in Saudi Arabia in May 2020 with the phrase NOW IS THE TIME WHEN ALL OF US MUST BREATHE swirling around in my mind. I had GEORGE HARRISON’S – ALL THINGS MUST PASS quietly on the turntable. ISN’T IT A PITY came on and the opening chords and song feel seemed to fit the thoughts and story that had been forming in my mind. I took a look through the album sleeve and read through the lyrics for ART OF DYING. I had in mind the same sort of idea but was thinking from the perspective of live well to die well, seize each moment boldly, lift the weight and give ourselves a break. All from very recent personal experience – though largely unrelated to global pandemic events at the time. From this beginning the lyrics tumbled out and I wrote the two verses and chorus right away. Scribbling in my notebook and finger picking an evolving chord progression on my nylon guitar.
The song sat in my notebook like that for +6 months until I circled back to it in preparation for recording. During this demo stage I added in a bridge section.
