Genius Annotation

The idea for this song came up from incorrectly hearing the lyrics of DEVO’s “Girl U Want” as “it’s just a girl, it’s just a girl at a gay bar” while the song was playing in a nightclub. (The actual lyric is “She’s just the girl, she’s just the girl, the girl you want”.)

Why was the music video for this song full of Abraham Lincoln's?
Genius Answer

Dick Valentine told Songfacts:

The directors of all those videos – “Radio Ga Ga,” “Danger! High Voltage” and “Gay Bar” – were done by a team called Kuntz and Maguire. They came up with the concepts, I just showed up and did the acting. But they had read a rumor that Lincoln may have been gay or bisexual. And so that was it – they were extrapolating gayness from Abraham Lincoln based on something they read.
