Hooch Lyrics

[Hook]
Who got the hooch
Who got the hooch
Who got the only sweetest thing in the world

[Verse 1]
The working day was long
And the road is grinding on
And your body's winding down again
The tribal fire's here
And the circle speaks so near
And the simple truth so very much clearer

[Hook]
Who got the hooch, baby
Who got the only sweetest thing in the world
Who got the love, who got the fresh-e-freshy
Who got the only sweetest thing in the world

[Verse 2]
The birds and bees will sing
The jams begin to ring
The good vibes flow from me to you
The evening turns to night
The fire and moonlight
The dance of all who came before
[Hook]
Who got the hooch, baby
Who got the only sweetest thing in the world
Who got the love, who got the fresh-e-freshy
Who got the only sweetest thing in the world

[Break]
Let's get real, let's get heavy
Till the water breaks the levee
Let's get loose, loose, who got the hooch

About

Genius Annotation

“Hooch” was the lead single of Everything’s 1998 album Supernatural. It was originally an a capella song sung in the back of the band’s bus that was later incorporated into live performances of their song “Soulfish”. Supernatural producer Jim Ebert later suggested the band flesh the song out as its own complete entity.

Released as the album’s lead single to help build interest in the band before their next ‘big single’ “Good Thing”, “Hooch” ended up becoming their only hit, reaching #69 on the Hot 100 in December 1998, preceded by a #12 peak on the Alternative Songs chart that August. Its inclusion in the Adam Sandler film The Waterboy helped the song’s success.

In 2001, “Hooch” was featured in season 1 of the TV show Scrubs and included on the show’s soundtrack Music From Scrubs in 2002.

Frontman Craig Honeycutt posted on his LinkedIn page:

It was about 36 hours from our homebase in Woodville, Virginia, to Colorado, and we usually drove it straight (switching drivers of course). On one of these journeys through the endless flat of Kansabraska, the song “Hooch” was born in the back of our airport shuttle ‘tour’ bus. It first took shape as an a capella with four-part harmony, and then we dropped it into our epic go-go jam called “Soulfish.” The middle of that song was basically anything goes, so for months we would just break it down and all sing “Who Got the Hooch.” When we signed with Blackbird/Sire, our producer, Jim Ebert, suggested that we turn that a capella into an actual song. We fleshed out the music in one afternoon session in the Pre-Civil War estate where we tracked the entire SuperNatural album. We even recorded the harmonies together on the back porch, as the sun sank behind the Blue Ridge.

In 1998, he explained to MTV:

It’s a song just to throw some soul out [with] after you’ve been working. Just let loose, celebrate life and why you’re living.
