Genius Annotation

One momunmental day in September of 1998 lead to one of the most legendary photos in hip-hop history. Taken by Gordon Parks for XXL Magazine, the photo entitled “A Great Day in Hip-Hop” depicts an unprecedented amount of emcees posing on the sidewalk of 17 East 126th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues in Harlem. Decades prior, a similar photograph entitled “A Great Day in Harlem” was taken, which depicted a large group of jazz musicians. This photo was a reiteration of that photo: it paid homage to the original photo and one of the genres that helped create rap while simultaneously paying tribute to the success and importance of hip-hop.
