I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango) Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Strange, I've seen that face before
Seen him hanging 'round my door
Like a hawk stealing for the prey
Like the night waiting for the day

[Verse 2]
Strange, he shadows me back home
Footsteps echo on the stones
Rainy nights, on Haussmann Boulevard
Parisian music drifting from the bars

[Verse 3]
Tu cherches quoi, rencontrer la mort ?
Tu te prends pour qui ?
Toi aussi, tu détestes la vie

[Verse 4]
Dance in bars and restaurants
Home with anyone who wants
Strange, he's standing there alone
Staring eyes chill me to the bone

[Verse 5]
Dans sa chambre, Joël et sa valise
Un regard sur ses fringues
Sur les murs, des photos
Sans regret, sans mélo
La porte est claquée, Joël est barré

About

Genius Annotation

The song juxtaposes “Libertango”, an Argentine tango classic, written by bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla and first recorded by the composer himself in 1974, against a reggae arrangement and new lyrics penned by Jones herself and Barry Reynolds. Lyrically, it describes the darker side of Parisian nightlife. Jones also recorded a Spanish language version of the track entitled “Esta cara me es conocida”, and an English version with the French passage recited in Portuguese.
