The song gained much notoriety because it was based on actual events that were taking place in Jamaica in the late 1980’s.

According to the Jamaica Observer

Wayne ‘Sandokan’ Smith, became public enemy number one after he masterminded and executed a brazen evening attack on the Olympic Gardens police station.

Despite constant curfews and raids to nab the cop killer, police never got their hands on Sandokan as he was cut down by gunmen in Tower Hill in 1989."
