Genius Annotation

One of the most legendary and well known grime instrumentals ever made, “Morgue” was a remix of (or inspired by) “What” by DJ Wonder, the first “halfstep” beat ever made.

The track would cause some controversy among the two, due to it’s clear intentional similarity. The beat was, for awhile, banned from rinse.fm, one of the biggest urban pirate radio stations at the time pushing grime music.

This was not a coincidental mistake – both DJ Wonder and Wiley had been beefing for some time. There was a rumour at the time that Wiley either did or attempted to have a relationship with DJ Wonder’s sister, which would end up with DJ Wonder allegedly physically beating Wiley.

DJ Wonder would end up creating at least two remixes of “Morgue”, called “Morgue Refix” and “Straight Morgue”.
