Spoilers

We catch a whiff of this when Lord Manderly gives his famous “The North Remembers” speech.

The Starks are all but dead and the Boltons now rule the North, requiring all former Stark vassals to obey or die. Manderly reveals to Davos, sent by Stannis to court his support, that he quite plainly intends to fuck over the Boltons when the moment is ripe.

There is another moment of hope when Jon Snow, at the end of A Feast For Crows, gets ready to leave Castle Black with volunteers to save Arya (not really Arya) from a marriage to Ramsay Bolton. Of course, he is cut down by his Night’s Watch brothers in an effort to protect the order’s vow of political neutrality.

Lots of deaths so far in the ASOIAF series.

While he has not killed numerous POV characters (only Eddard Stark, Catelyn Stark, Jon Snow(?) Quentyn Martell, and Arys Oakheart), he’s offed numerous characters important to the story such as Robert Baratheon, Khal Drogo, Tywin Lannister, Robb Stark, Viserys Targaryen, Kevan Lannister, Maester Pycelle, Joffrey Baratheon, Oberyn Martell, Renly Baratheon, Jeor Mormont…you get the point.

This is one of the most interesting parts. GRRM has commented extensively on his ASOIAF not having a “Big Bad” but instead dealing with good and evil as it is perceived by each character.

We don’t need any more Dark Lords, we don’t need any more, ‘Here are the good guys, they’re in white, there are the bad guys, they’re in black. And also, they’re really ugly, the bad guys.

It is certainly a genuine, legitimate topic as the core of fantasy, but I think the battle between Good and Evil is waged within the individual human hearts. We all have good in us and we all have evil in us, and we may do a wonderful good act on Tuesday and a horrible, selfish, bad act on Wednesday, and to me, that’s the great human drama of fiction.

Seeing as Martin has gone to great lengths to paint the Others as anything but “inhuman”, it’s entirely possible that he’s pitching the Others the way his characters would describe them, not the way he views them. Possibly because he needed a “Big Bad” to market the series around, possibly because he wanted this to be our first impression of the Others before he slowly pulled the curtain away.

The focus here is not on the top 1% of Americans, but the top 0.1% and top 0.01% of Americans who have witnessed the largest gains in income and inequality.

The top .1% (160,000 families) hold 22% of America’s wealth, which is the same as the bottom 90% of Americans. The top .01% (16,000 families) hold around 11% of the wealth.

This is a deliberate manipulation of statistics. The deficit should be analyzed in relation to America’s GDP, not real dollars. Simply mapping out the numerical value does not tell us anything about the changes in the actual economy.

If the increase in the debt grows at a rate alarmingly faster than GDP, then we have cause for concern. If the increase in debt is at a rate around or lower than the GDP, then we would draw different conclusions.

In fact, the deficit has actually seen major reduction since the Great Recession.

If Jeb Bush was truly concerned, he would argue about the trend of spending.

For example, Politifact concludes after rating Obama’s claim to have “reduced the deficit by two-thirds” as mostly true that there is still cause for concern.

The country’s spending is not expected to continue its downward route, according to federal forecasters, for factors that include increased interest payments on the debt and the lack of substantial policy changes for the country’s biggest programs, like Social Security and Medicare.

Don’t forget about the tax cuts.

The stimulus bill alone had $281 billion in tax cuts directly largely at middle-class individuals, families, and small businesses.

Let’s not forget that Jeb Bush has made this claim before and Politifact already deemed it “mostly false”.
