Both fail to imagine and realize any serious undertakings that attempt to deepen the human experience, the fundamental aspect of any democratic project.

Claiming that “despair seems to be the dominant sentiment of the contemporary Left”, Robin Mackay and Armen Avanessian argue similarly in the introduction to #Accelerate, their compilation of texts on accelerationism:

two major risks: on the one hand, a cynical resignation to a _politique du pire_, a politics that must hope for the worst and can think the future only as apocalypse and tabula rasa; on the other, the replacement of the insistence that capitalism will die of its internal contradictions with a championing of the market whose supposed radicalism is indistinguishable from the passive acquiescence into which political power has devolved.

Their polarizing project has been beaten up in academia, and I’m sure Mason’s will face a similar onslaught if anyone serious takes it seriously.

I think there exists such an open ended reference with individualism in the article’s context. It is more selfishism (yes I made that word up) because being selfish is more of a fitting root word than individual. For the right and obligation to be an individual is paramount in things changing. Everyone needs to find their own voice and become an individual before we are to become a collective.

Mr. Obama has proposed reducing the sentences of nonviolent offenders, saying last week that nonviolent drug offenders are the “the real reason our prison population is so high.” That is true in the federal prison system, where roughly half of inmates were convicted of drug offenses. Why It Will Be Hard for Obama to Downsize Prisons - The New York Times

By the New York Times own contradictory admission, this statement is true for the prison population (which Obama was speaking of) and not solely the federal or state prison population.

According to the graph:

Violent Growth

  • 461,000 violent prisoners at the state level + 6,000 prisoners at the federal level
  • 467,000 violent prisoners added since 1985

Non-violent Growth

  • 89,000 drug prisoners at the federal level + 65,000 other prisoners at the federal level + 107,000 property prisoners at the state level+ 171,000 drug prisoners at the state level + 121,000 public order/other prisoners at the state level
  • 553,000 non-violent prisoners added since 1985

So from 1985 to 2012, the total nonviolent growth did exceed violent growth.

If we disregard the intent of the statement and narrow the application of it, which was the general prison population not solely the state or federal level, then the NYT is correct.

If we recognize that by saying “our prison population” the President’s referent was America’s prison population and thus state+federal, then the NYT is incorrect.

The United States has tried to overthrow the Cuban government since the moment it took power after the July 26th revolt against the US-backed Batista dictatorship.

The US government began with “a significant increase in CIA-supervised bombing and incendiary raids piloted by exiled Cubans” and continually escalated the range of sabotage against farms, industrial centers, even civilian infrastructure, and arming of guerillas and terrorists both inside and outside of Cuba in a bid to “bring another govenrment to power in Cuba”.

As of July 20, 2015, there have been two small rounds of changes that will help with growing Cuba’s smothered private sector.

The first round came about on January 16, 2015 when the State Department declared that Americans were allowed to now support private businesses and engage in development projects. Additionally, US corporations were now allowed to export to Cuba certain materials that could be used for development projects or private sector activity.

The 1/16/2015 revisions to established Department of Commerce and Department of Treasury policy also opened the door for Cuba’s penetration by telecommunications and internet corporations.

The second round came about on February 13, 2015 when the State Department published a list of “goods and services produced by independent Cuban entrepreneurs that may be imported into the United States.”

Cuba is not a major consumer, producer, or transit point of illicit narcotics. Cuba’s intensive security presence and bilateral interdiction efforts have effectively reduced the available supply of narcotics on the island and prevented traffickers from establishing a foothold.

The report singles out the nation of Cuba as one of Washington’s few reliable allies in the hemisphere when it comes to America’s crusade against drugs.
