Despite BadMouse lampooning a sexist hashtag and Goldman’s own hostility towards suffragettes, Emma Goldman is considered an invaluable figure in the history of the feminist movement. She was one of the earliest anarcha-feminists, an advocate for contraception availability (for which she was arrested), and one of the earliest opponents of homophobia.

This is better known as the Haymarket Affair. In 1886, a group of labor activists were advocating for the 8-hour work day (AKA the 9 to 5) and decided to gather because some workers had been killed by police prior. An unknown assailant tossed dynamite into the crowd, the police became belligerent, and eight anarchists were arrested (half of them hanged).

The later opinion of the trial surrounding these anarchists was that the court acted unfairly, and the effects of the Haymarket Affair were profound on the labor movement globally. Domestically the Affair was the catalyst for the anarchism of early anarcha-feminist Emma Goldman and IWW co-founder Lucy Parsons.

Celebrated everywhere except America, which has a separate thing called Labor Day, which is celebrated on a completely different date.
