Another word for a drug dealer is a “D-Boy”. Rappers throughout Hip-Hop culture, including, but not limited to, 50 Cent and Jay-Z, glorify their gangsta' and drug dealing lifestyles.

Lupe hopes for a future where kids don’t have to follow in these footsteps.

By saying they want his ‘smell’, Lupe is saying that other rappers want to be like him — with ‘smell’ likely referring to his skills as a rapper.

No matter how hard they try to be like Lupe, they will always have something that gives them away as an imposter. In this instance, Lupe compares this ‘something’ to a well-noticeable accent. In addition, Lupe plays more with the theme of cologne, as “Axe” is a brand of cologne and wearing it would make you Axe-scented (accented).

‘Eau de Lupe’ translates to ‘Water of Lupe’ in French. Playing off the theme of smell, many cologne’s are named with ‘eau de …’ to sound exotic and sophisticated, as Lupe’s sound often is. The rappers who try to imitate this ‘smell’ Lupe has will just end up failing and smelling like the well-known cartoon skunk, Pepe Le Pew.

‘Doing dirt with the devil’ is likely an allusion to the drug game, with an additional reference to the Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner and how it sucks up dust. Moreover, the desire to take part in this drug game can lead one to death, when the body returns to Earth and becomes the literal dust.

An additional interpretation sees ‘dust’ as a reference to Angel Dust. Considering that the world ‘devil’ is mentioned in relation to the drug game, this makes for a nice antithesis.

Reference to the rapper Q-Tip, who coined the phrase “vivrant” on his 1999 song “Vivrant Thing”. His stage name is derived from the brand Q-Tip, a cotton swab used for cleaning ears.

Both Lupe and Q-Tip are Muslim and saying “Assalamu Alaikum” is a customary greeting.

Ghost writing is when rappers have another writer create the lyrics to their songs for them. Lupe is so lyrically inclined that he feels he could be a writer for the aforementioned ghost writers.

Moreover, the reference to ghosts here continues the theme seen in the previous line, but under a different context.

A homophone on heard/herd —as in hearing a certain sound, and herding a group of cattle or a flock of sheep — Lupe states that all of the MYH’s enemies are out to get him. He describes the guns they will use as semi automatic, such as AK-47’s and Mac 11’s, then furthers the description by adding the onomatopoeia “ka-pow”.
