The mythological story of Narcissus tells a cautionary tale of self-infatuation. When Narcissus saw his own reflection, he fell in love with it, staring at it until his death.
With this in mind, paired with the self-deprecating tone of much of Teens of Denial, Toledo warns against the effects of seeing oneself through one’s biased perspective.

This possibly plays off the ‘graveyard’ verse that these lines are sandwiched between. The protagonist “steered clear of graveyards” because “nobody should ever have to look at themselves” meaning that we all die eventually; graveyards are where we all end up, and nobody should ever have to look at their future selves (plots and gravestones)

Man shouldn’t be able to see his own face – there’s nothing more sinister. Nature gave him the gift of not being able to see it, and of not being able to stare into his own eyes.
Only in the water of rivers and ponds could he look at his face. And the very posture he had to assume was symbolic. He had to bend over, stoop down, to commit the ignominy of beholding himself.
The inventor of the mirror poisoned the human heart.
— Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet (1982)
This song is about self-loathing, and not self-love. Looking at yourself is painful; especially after pushing someone away and being embarrassed by a cop to the point of crying. People should obviously have to look at themselves, but the narrator doesn’t want to because he is not comfortable with everything he is discovering.
The entire album is about maturing. Not wanting to cause pain is a recurring theme, and the narrator wishes he could spare himself. Self-obsession may be a theme, but self-appreciation is not.

maybe it’s just me but i also feel this lyric could be more literal. as in no one should be forced to see themselves reflected on random surfaces when they least expect it, or no one should have to deal with themselves.
