Euripides (c. 480-c. 406 B.C.) is one of the few tragic playwrights of ancient Greece whose plays have survived. He is known for depicting his ancient heroes as ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, as well as his sympathies toward women and others viewed as second-class by Athenian society.
