Lyricist for the Grateful Dead and a musician and performer in his own rite, having put out a dozen albums between 1974 and 1993. Early on, before the formation of the Grateful Dead he performed in bluegrass bands with Jerry Garcia. He has published several books of poetry and translations of poetry.
