No Child Left Behind, that's the American scheme
NCLB aimed to get all students in the US public school system to achieve “proficient” level in reading and math in the 8th grade by 2014 (currently is at ~35%). Macklemore’s suggesting that reading and math aren’t everything, or the keys to success. Kids feel their score measured their worth. He is not his test score. No one is. He does what he loves and he’s successful, and he sends that message to all kids; do what you love.
Of course, “the American scheme” is a play on “the American dream,” pointing out that the American dream of upward social mobility is maybe not as attainable as it’s supposed to be.
