Dear Marie Lyrics
Dear Marie, tell me what it was I used to be?
Dear Marie, tell me what it was I used to be?
And if you’re further up the road
Can you show me what I still can’t see?
Remember me, I’m the boy you used to love
When we were fifteen
Remember me, I’m the boy you used to love
When we were fifteen
Now I wonder what you think
When you see me on the magazine
From time to time
I go looking for your photograph online
From time to time
I go looking for your photograph online
Some county judge in Ohio is all I ever find
[Outro]
Dear Marie, tell me do you still believe in me?
Dear Marie, tell me do you still believe in me?
Well I’ve got my dream, but you’ve got a family
Yeah I’ve got that dream, but you’ve got yourself a family
Yeah I’ve got that dream, but I guess it got away from me
About
“Dear Marie” is a song written to a girl John used to be in a relationship with back in high school but due to him pursuing a career in music the relationship ended up ending. As mentioned in an episode of Current Mood, Marie was the only girl he dated before he was famous, and she was “the one that got away” for him; someone that he knew liked him not because he was famous, but because of who he was. In this song, he’s asking Marie what kind person he was then and if the life he chose changed him.
Marie is a real person, though not by that name, John called it a, “letter to someone that gets to no one”.

I’m not the only person to say it, but in some ways you’re forever the age you were when you first got famous. And there was really only one girl I ever went out with before things got complicated by my holding a guitar onstage.
