As I, watch it all pan out, try not to stand out
Fish out of water, yet an official reporter
J Cole doesn’t want to end up in the headlines. He sees and can rap about all the horrible crime and violence but doesn’t want to wind up dead on front page news.
Cole, being a “fish out of water” (i.e. a young guy from a relatively small town in the South now in the biggest city in the North), is saying that even though he isn’t originally from NYC, he still has the ability to tell its stories.
ALso Cole attended college at St. Johns, in New York. Him being from the south and now in the NY atmosphere makes him the “fish out of water”.
Being a pretty good rapper in the birthplace of hip hop (New York), as well as graduating magna cum laude, would definitely make anyone an “official reporter”
