Duck... and cover!
Duck and Cover is a 1950s public service announcement created for use in classrooms, that informs children on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.
It’s often pointed to as an example of a foolhardy government endeavour or propaganda designed to sooth citizens' fears without really doing anything to help. And it’s true that radiation poisoning will indeed kill you, in an agonizing fashion.
However, beyond a certain blast radius, “duck and cover” actually works because the main danger is exposed skin (cover) and being blown away by the shockwave (ducking). Lying or ducking and covering minimizes these dangers. The most successful survivors of the Nagasaki bombings included policemen who ducked, and covered.
