Me, sobering up? Ha! ALF
ALF was a TV show about an alien (named ALF) that aired from 1986-1990. ALF’s signature catchphrase was “Haaa! I kill me.” Royce finds the idea of sobering up hilarious, so he uses ALF’s catchphrase to describe it.
A few other possible, but less likely, interpretations:
- Earlier in the line he calls himself sick, and considering all the drugs he’s doing (he is on everything), he could also be referencing the second part of ALF’s catchphrase: “I kill me.” ALF means it as he finds himself hilarious. Royce could be using it in a more literal sense to imply that he’s killing himself by doing so many drugs.
- ALF’s name is an acronym for Alien Life Form. Royce compares himself being sober to ALF as in “out of this world.” Royce being sober would be uncommon, or out of this world, much like an alien (ALF).
- “Ha! Out!”: as in the idea of him sobering up is so out of the question it’s hilarious.
- “Hoer Auf”: A German expression which roughly translates as
“get outta here” or “stop it (this ain’t gonna happen)”. Anyone who doesn’t speak German would never recognize it, but anybody who does may interpret it that way also. It’s highly doubtful Royce is fluent in German and intended this meaning, but it’s still interesting.
