My Roc, flawless
In contrast to the literal “rock” (ie. diamond) of the previous lines, the music video indicates that this is a reference to the Roc (Roc-A-Fella Records and now Roc Nation) and a nod to Bey’s husband and Roc-A-Fella/Roc Nation founder Jay Z. Husbands are also sometimes compared to rocks, as the backbone of the traditional family unit.
The melody and phrasing of the song’s hook, especially this section, and particularly Beyoncé’s intonation on the word “Roc”, bare many similarities to the melody and lyrics of the traditional American spiritual “Sinnerman”, made perhaps most famous by Nina Simone.
