Refers to the disputed theory that the Aztecs believed Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés to be the mythical man-god Quetzalcoatl because:
According to Aztec legend, Quetzalcoatl vowed to return in the year 1-Reed. Cortés arrived in 1519, a 1-Reed year.
Quetzalcoatl was often depicted as fair-skinned and bearded and wearing armour. The Spanish fit this description to a tee.
Historians are undecided on whether the Aztecs truly believed Cortés to be Quetzalcoatl, especially as much of the supporting evidence comes from Spanish accounts. KRS takes the theory a step further by suggesting that Cortés deliberately timed his arrival to coincide with the Aztec mythology.
