And I kept my room straight
When Macklemore was young he thought he was gay because he kept his room neat and wasn’t messy like other boys his age. He thought that being neat and artistic could mean he was gay because of the stereotypes he was fed.
Also, some nice wordplay with the use of ‘straight’ meaning (heterosexual), as the antithesis (or opposite) of homosexual, this creates contrast with the line:
I thought that I was gay
Which is further emphasised with “gay” and “straight” forming half rhyme of the long a sound.
All of this aids in painting a picture of the stereotyping of homosexuals which even children are exposed to.
