This is debatable. The opposition succeeding or failing probably, in the long run, had little to do with the fate of Crimea or the nation as a whole. The Putin Doctrine’s aim of rebuilding the Soviet state would not have seen an ideological shift regardless of the opposition’s results. Their lengthy Foreign Affairs article “Drop Your Weapons: When and Why Civil Resistance Works” and the 2008 International Security article “Why Civil Resistance Works” both offer clear insight into the duo’s findings. The former, released in mid-2014, contains discussions of their thesis when applied to the current Ukraine situation. The latter is the brilliant study that provided the structural backbone for asserting that nonviolent campaigns have better chances of succeeding and lasting than their violent counterparts.
