P.S. We should be together too
If Stan’s such a big Eminem fan, you’d think he would’ve noticed Em’s (or Slim’s, to be precise) recurring homophobia.
However, this does come across as a mixed message; Stan has a high degree of adoration / admiration for Em that reaches a feeling near love, despite this previously mentioned phobia (suggesting Stan doesn’t really read too much into the lyrics or notice their hyperbole or irony).
To the listener, who feels this paradox, and doesn’t believe Stan truly loves Em, it gives way to extrapolation; though fans who can experience those twisted feelings for their idol are hopefully quite rare, it lets people relate to some similar feelings they could experience for the high school most beautiful girl who was not looking at them, for instance — which maybe explains part of the success of the song.
