Anti-up the slight cost of exhaustion
Feeling down, or low, depressed, is the cost of his work which exhausts him. The first line is also a play on “ante up” a poker term demanding payment to be dealt into a hand. Aesop embraces the beautiful/painful blood roses of the underground world at night, making him exhausted during his day.
