Or make me cross like a crucifix
Or the legs on a Buddhist sitter deep in thought
From the previous line about being “set off”, Lupe is cross or angry because of this inner demon. He then uses visual similies to help illustrate his emotion:
The most important Christian symbol is the crucifix, which shows Jesus on the cross.
Buddhists sit in padmasana, or Lotus position, which is a cross-legged seated posture while they meditate.
These religious examples of “cross” are not accidental: they relate back to both the idea of his temple being a place of worship and also the idea of form following function. Buddhists mediate to facilitate nirvana. It just so happens that when they are in pursuit of his peaceful state (function) their form is in this cross-legged position.
This line also establishes a Christian motif while continuing the Buddhist one
