Live among the serpents,
A serpent, or a snake, is often associated with evil. It was a serpent who lured Eve to circumvent God’s Will and eat from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge, which lead to the Fall of Man.
With a bit of hyperbole, Jay makes a comparison between his ‘mission’ on earth and Christ’s mission. Matthew 9:11 and Mark 2:6 expand on this. The religious leaders criticized Christ for communing with the sinners & tax collectors to which Jesus responded; “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:13)
In this case, Jay is positing himself as ‘one’ who dwells amongst ‘serpents’ — defined as his associations through ‘business and pleasure’ even though Jay’s topmost priority is to make them believers/repentants from their ‘evil’ ways.
