Visions of Martin Luther staring at me
This is a very deep line. To begin, Kendrick is reminiscing on the ideologies of peace & social advancements of colored people advocated by the great Martin Luther King Jr. However, those ideas conflict with those of Malcolm X’s, which seemed to be what Kendrick is more in tune with as depicted in the next lines, through the “hex.”
These visions could be in the form of a dream, which would be a play on words of MLK’s famed “I Have a Dream” speech. Genius! Additionally, Kendrick is saying that MLK is literally looking at him in scrutiny, which makes Kendrick reanalyze his walk in life. Is he, Kendrick, satisfying the vision MLK had before he died as a martyr? Very thought provoking rap lyrics here.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was leader in the African American civil rights movement who fought for the civil rights and equality of black people. He fought nonviolently against racism and for his beliefs until he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Notice that most of the people mentioned in this song were assassinated.
