Brace yourself, I'll take you on a trip down memory lane
Worth mentioning the opening imperative. Even though he claims to be taking us on a ‘trip down memory lane’, itself a cliche for gentle reminiscence, we are actually about to be taken on a roller-coaster/safari/battle. How do we know this? Because he instructs us to ‘brace ourselves’ first.
This is underlined by his pitchy, slightly uncomfortable delivery on this track. He delivers the verse with a slight falsetto, which could also serve to punctuate that this is a foray into the past; he could be taking on the persona of “young Kendrick” or “K.Dot”.
Nas similarly took us on a “trip down memory lane” back in 1994.
