Queens niggas run you niggas, ask Russell Simmons, ha
Nas is from Queens, as is Russell Simmons. Russell Simmons is the hip-hop mogul who started Def Jam. Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella records was a Def Jam label, so Jay-Z’s boss was, like Nas, a guy from Queens.
Ironically, Nas ended up working for Jay-Z when he was signed to Def Jam under Jay’s presidency. Then again Jay did say you don’t sign Nas… You partner with him. Note also that he wasn´t elected president for his skills on the mic, but because he´s a good busniess man. Jay wasn´t a majority share holder either so he was employed by Def Jam just as Nas.
He speaks on the subject here:
http://youtu.be/JstLBFK3iSQ?t=5m That Jay Z didn´t actually sign him, Nas was still with Colombia records with Hip Hop is Dead and Untitled — Def Jam and Colombia split it up. His first solo album that was soley Def Jam was Life is Good — When Jay wasn´t no longer president. It was a power move tha L.A Reid organized to release both Nas HHID and Jay Z´s comeback album the same year.
